The one with Justice League, Battle of the Sexes and Ingrid goes west

“Here comes AdmitOne, Here comes AdmitOne right down Cinema-Lane…”

The world spins towards Christmas and Admit One has a bit of a cold-enforced breather. However Simon and Mat return with another packed episode where Mat reviews Aubrey Plaza and Elizabeth Olsen in Ingrid Goes West, Simon takes a look at Emma Stone and Steve Carrell in 70’s tennis drama Battle of the Sexes, and Mat bravely faces down the Justice League.

Plus some news, a lot of gushing over being picked as BritPodScene‘s podcast of the week, and an impassioned plea for our US listeners to petition their Congressmen and women to vote down the proposed changes to Net Neutrality laws.

Don’t worry, there are still some jokes.

Also, from this episode, we are available on Spotify and Google Play services!

The one with Murder on the Orient Express, Thor: Ragnarok, The Shining and Paddington 2

Murder on the Orient Express brings together an all star cast (and Johnny Depp) in a classic tale of skulduggery and murder. Mat took a look and, like Poirot in a dining room, gives us his opinion.

Simon has seen the bright and breezy Marvel movie Thor:Ragnarok, with extra comedy and bonus Jeff Goldblum. Thor, Loki and the Hulk are stuck on a hostile planet and need to figure out how to get back and kick the Asgard out of that nasty Cate Blanchett.

Mat has also seen his beloved The Shining on the big screen for the first time and, naturally, was blown away by the experience. Whilst, for other reasons, Simon was blown away by the sheer cuddliness of Paddington 2.

The news is depressing, all sex scandals and heroes’ reputations being destroyed before your eyes – it’s almost like being a fan of road cycling all over again. Disney are morally dubious, the LA Times won a minor battle and, yes, we do check in on the current status of Mickey Rourke.

The one with mother!, Wind River, Kingsman and Star Trek: Discovery

Simon and Mat return with reviews of Wind River, the latest from Sicario and Hell or High Water scribe Tyler Sheridan, Darren Aronofsky’s mother! with Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, and the riotous Kingsman: The Golden Circle starring seemingly everyone (and Mat tests Simon’s movie knowledge on the cast).

The Trek fans in both of them then insists on checking out the latest Star Trek series, Discovery, with Sonequa Martin-Green, Jason Isaacs and Michelle Yeoh.

The pair rip into the lacklustre trailer releases, examine the career of Harry Dean Stanton, explain the importance of X Atencio and #Rourkewatch has an actual newsworthy tale of everyone’s favourite Mickey and the bizarre link to retired footballer Rio Ferdinand.

Due to stupidity, we ended up alongside the Beehive Cricket Club’s AGM and they’re … … passionate. Apologies for the background noise.

Bad Jokes bonus

Our recordings take a while. They also involve beer. Sometimes they involve jokes. Here, for your listening pleasure, is fifteen minutes of truly terrible jokes and insults edited out from the last episode. We hope it’ll raise a smile.

The one with Logan Lucky, Detroit, It and American Made

Steven Soderbergh’s new heist thriller Logan Lucky, with Channing Tatum, Adam Driver and introducing some guy called Daniel Craig, gets Mat’s attentions. Simon casts his eye over Tom Cruise’s latest American Made and Katherine Bigelow’s powerful Detroit. Mat then puts on his bravery trousers and faces the latest cinematic version of Stephen King’s It.

Otherwise  there’s a distinct lack of news, and Celebrity Deaths (Yay Mickey Rourke still lives), so this week you get a whole fistful of reviews and, sadly, Any Other Business.

The one with Atomic Blonde, Hitman’s Bodyguard and Dark Tower

Reviews of Williams, Atomic Blonde, The Hitman’s Bodyguard and The Dark Tower

The local podcast with most of its listeners in the USA returns, with a working audio file this time (sorry, so sorry) and a load of goodies for your lucky fans.

News and gossip to begin with, mostly DCEU focussed with discussions of The Batman and the next Wonder Woman (though not about Patty Jenkins giving a bitch-slap to James Cameron).

A swift run through those notable film stars who have passed on since we were last on air. And one who hasn’t (#Rourkewatch).

Simon has a review of family documentary Williams which is less about the legendary F1 team, and more about the family behind the name.

Mat reviews the Charlize Theron 90s set Euro-action flick Atomic Blonde, also starring James McAvoy.

More Euro-carnage as Simon reviews Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L Jackson in The Hitman’s Bodyguard, which also stars a foul-mouthed Salma Hayek.

Final review this week sees Mat cast his eye over Idris Elba and Matthew McConnaughey in the long-awaited adaptation of Stephen King‘s legendary series of novels, The Dark Tower.
